Vertiv’s New KVM Switch Brings FIPS 140-3 Security and Remote BIOS Access to Enterprise Data Centers

Vertiv has expanded its IT management lineup with the Avocent MergePoint Unity 2, a next-generation KVM switch designed for centralized, secure access to servers across enterprise and edge data center environments. The unit ships with FIPS 140-3 cryptographic standards baked in — the federal benchmark for cryptographic security — alongside smart card and CAC (Common Access Card) authentication, making it a credible option for government and defense-adjacent deployments that can’t compromise on access control.

Beyond the security credentials, the MergePoint Unity 2 covers the practical bases administrators actually care about. Remote UEFI/BIOS access means technicians can troubleshoot and configure servers at the firmware level without being physically present — a capability that becomes critical when managing edge sites with minimal on-site staff. Virtual Media support lets admins remotely mount drives for OS installs or firmware updates. The management interface is entirely browser-based, removing the need for dedicated client software, and the hardware fits in a compact 1U chassis with a local rackmount console (LRA) for on-site access.

The switch integrates with Vertiv’s DSView management software and the MP1000 management platform, slotting into existing Vertiv-managed environments without requiring a rip-and-replace of the broader management stack. That compatibility matters for enterprise IT teams that have already standardized on Vertiv infrastructure and want to extend centralized control without adding a new management silo.

Why It Matters

KVM switches are infrastructure furniture — unglamorous but essential. What’s interesting about the MergePoint Unity 2 is the combination of high-assurance security certifications with practical remote management features in a single 1U unit. As edge computing deployments multiply and IT teams are expected to manage more nodes with fewer hands on-site, tools that enable deep remote access — including pre-boot firmware access — while meeting strict security standards are increasingly in demand. The FIPS 140-3 certification in particular signals Vertiv is targeting regulated industries and public sector contracts, not just general enterprise.

Vertiv is a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, serving data centers, communication networks, and commercial and industrial environments worldwide.
