If you have been keeping an eye on the Chinese automotive scene lately, you know that BYD is no longer just a budget player. Their premium sub-brand, Denza, has been moving at a breakneck pace, and their latest announcement is enough to make even the most established European luxury brands a bit nervous.
The Denza Z9 GT refresh has just landed in its home market, and the headline figures are, quite frankly, difficult to ignore. Denza is now claiming to have produced the world’s longest-range EV, pushing the boundaries of what we thought was possible with current battery chemistry.
Denza has already seen massive success with its D9 MPV, which has moved around 300,000 units in less than three years. However, the Z9 GT is a different beast entirely. It is a sleek, elegant shooting brake that combines the utility of an estate with the performance of a high-end sports car. With this new update, BYD is taking the best tech from its vast internal R&D departments and wrapping it in materials that feel genuinely premium.
Pushing the limits of electric range
The standout feature of the Denza Z9 GT refresh is the new CLTC-certified range of 1,036 km, which is roughly 644 miles. To achieve this, Denza has introduced a massive 122.5kWh battery pack. They are claiming a battery performance improvement of about 64% over the previous iteration. For those who do not need quite that much distance, there is also a 102kWh option that still offers a very respectable 820 km of range.
It is important to remember that CLTC stands for China Light-Duty Vehicle Test Cycle. It tends to be a bit more generous than the WLTP standards we use in Europe or the EPA ratings in the US. Even so, crossing the 1,000 km threshold is a psychological milestone for the industry. It effectively removes “range anxiety” from the conversation for anyone but the most extreme long-distance drivers.
A hybrid that acts like a pure EV
Perhaps even more impressive than the pure electric model is what Denza has done with the plug-in hybrid version. The updated Denza Z9 GT PHEV battery now sits at 63.82kWh. That is a massive pack for a hybrid. In fact, it delivers an all-electric range of over 400 km.
Think about that for a second. This hybrid has more electric-only range than many dedicated EVs currently sitting on dealership lots today. It is nearly double the 201 km range of the previous PHEV model. For the average commuter, this means you could effectively drive on electricity for an entire week without the petrol engine ever kicking in, while still having the internal combustion backup for those cross-country trips.
Charging at the speed of light
Range is only half of the equation; the other half is how fast you can get back on the road. This is where the BYD flash-charging infrastructure comes into play. The Z9 GT has been spotted testing with BYD’s new 1,500kW charging outlets. These are not your standard motorway chargers.
This level of power is designed to brim these large batteries in just a few minutes. While we are still waiting for the full rollout of these ultra-fast stations, the fact that the hardware in the car can handle that kind of current suggests that the “recharge time” argument against EVs is finally starting to crumble. If you can add 500 km of range in the time it takes to grab a coffee, the utility of a luxury electric shooting brake becomes undeniable.
Coming to a road near you
Up until now, the Denza Z9 has been a China-only affair. That is about to change. BYD has confirmed plans to bring both the traditional luxury saloon and the Z9 GT fastback to the United Kingdom and Europe later this year.
Entering the European market is a bold move. This is the home turf of Porsche, Mercedes, and BMW. However, Denza isn’t just competing on price anymore. They are competing on raw specs and interior luxury. The Z9 GT is a statement piece. It shows that BYD can build a car that is not only technologically superior in terms of range and charging but also visually stunning.
The refreshed Z9 GT is available for order now in both EV and PHEV guises.
