DJI Releases Firmware Update Enabling 8K Video for Osmo Action 6

DJI has released a major firmware update for its flagship action camera, the Osmo Action 6. The headline addition is the support for 8K UHD video recording, a resolution previously unavailable on this hardware. This update follows the camera’s initial global launch in November 2025 and is available to all current owners via the DJI Mimo mobile application.

The new 8K recording mode operates at a 16:9 aspect ratio with frame rate options of 24, 25, and 30fps. This mode utilizes the 1/1.1-inch CMOS sensor to capture 7680 x 4320 resolution video. For professional workflows, the 8K mode supports 10-bit D-Log M color recording using the H.265 codec. However, some high-end features like Film Tone and Quality Priority are disabled when recording at this resolution. Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) during 8K capture is restricted to RockSteady and RockSteady+ modes, with Field of View (FOV) options limited to Standard, Natural Wide, and Wide.

Beyond resolution increases, the firmware introduces a direct cloud upload feature. Users can now configure the Osmo Action 6 to automatically upload footage to services including Google Drive, OneDrive, Baidu Netdisk, and Quark Netdisk, as well as private Network Attached Storage (NAS) devices. This system is designed to facilitate faster backups and remote editing workflows without requiring manual file transfers to a computer.

The update also brings several creative and functional tools to the device. A new focus peaking feature has been added to assist users when using the macro lens or FOV Boost lens. Photo mode now includes film-style tone presets, allowing for stylized image output directly from the camera. Additionally, the Quick Switch (QS) button can now be customized to include “Screen Off” and “Zoom” shortcuts. For users who utilize the camera as a webcam or for live streaming, the update enables gesture control functionality.

Technical optimizations in this release include enhanced image quality under the “Image Quality Priority” mode and improved skin tone rendering in the new Portrait mode. The update also addresses minor software bugs and optimizes the grid overlay in custom shooting modes.

The DJI Osmo Action 6 is currently available for purchase at a retail price of $379 for the Standard Combo. The Adventure Combo, which includes three batteries and an extension pole, is priced at $479. The firmware update is free and can be installed by connecting the camera to the DJI Mimo app version 2.6.8 or later. Editing and downloading 8K footage via the mobile app is currently supported on iPhone 15 Pro models and newer, with expanded device compatibility expected in future app releases.
