DJI’s Osmo Action 4 Boasts Larger Sensor and Premium Pricing

Drone manufacturer DJI has announced the release of the Osmo Action 4, an upgraded version of its previous Action 3 camera. The most significant improvement in the Osmo Action 4 is its enhanced low-light performance, thanks to the introduction of a larger 1/1.3-inch sensor, the same sensor found in DJI’s Mavic 3 Pro, Mini 3 Pro, and Air 3 drones. This is a notable upgrade from the 1/1.7-inch sensor on the Action 3 and the 1/1.9-inch sensor on the GoPro Hero 11.

The Osmo Action 4 also introduces D-Log M, which significantly improves the camera’s dynamic range over the Action 3. Other features of the Action 4 remain largely unchanged, including a 155-degree field of view, f/2.8 aperture, and video capabilities of up to 4K at 120p (10-bit HDR) in normal shooting mode. However, the photo resolution and max 4:3 video quality are slightly lower compared to the previous model.

The design of the Osmo Action 4 remains identical to the Action 3, with a record button on top, a power button on the side, and a battery compartment/micro SD slot on the right side. It retains the nifty magnetic locking system introduced with the last model, allowing for easy attachment of accessories without the need for a case. The camera supports accessories compatible with GoPro mounts and comes with its own set of accessories.

One of the significant changes in the Action 4 is the improvement in its waterproof capability, now waterproof down to 18m (59 feet) without a case, and up to an impressive 60m (208 feet) with the waterproof case.

The Osmo Action 4 features the latest version of DJI’s stabilization technology, Rocksteady 3.0 and Rocksteady 3.0+, which effectively reduces camera shake in all directions up to the maximum 4K/60fps. It also supports HorizonSteady, which keeps the horizon level regardless of the camera’s rotation, and HorizonBalancing, which corrects horizontal tilt within ±45° for stabilized recording at 4K/60fps.

DJI’s smartphone app is required to activate and use the Action 4, offering features such as viewing and transferring footage, and live-streaming via WiFi.

The release of the Action 4 is a response to feedback from reviews of the Action 3, which criticized its low-light image quality and stabilization. With the Action 4’s improved sensor and stabilization functions, DJI aims to address these concerns and offer a better overall experience for users.

Despite the enhancements, the Action 4’s price has increased considerably to $399, making it a more challenging sell against competitors like the GoPro Hero 11, which is available at the same price. However, DJI offers an Adventure Combo package at $499, which includes the camera and various accessories, making it a more appealing option for content creators seeking high-quality footage or those looking to complement their DJI products.
