Polish billionaire Rafal Brzoska and his wife are preparing to take legal action against Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, over fake advertisements circulating on the platforms that feature Brzoska’s image and misleading information about his wife.
Brzoska, the founder of InPost, a prominent parcel locker company, revealed that they have yet to choose a jurisdiction for the lawsuit. This move is part of a broader effort to hold tech giants accountable for allowing misleading ads to persist despite user complaints.
Meta’s response has been that it removes false ads once notified and collaborates with local authorities to combat scammers. However, Brzoska stated that he first reported the issue to Meta in early July, but the problem remains unresolved.
“We are planning to file a private lawsuit against Meta… The jurisdiction has not been decided yet. We will consider all options, including possibly filing in the United States if no action is taken in Europe,” Brzoska told Reuters.
He further mentioned that they would seek to stop Meta from profiting off content that infringes on their rights and demand significant compensation, which they plan to donate to charity, reflecting the advertising revenues generated from such disinformation.
Recently, Poland’s Personal Data Protection Office mandated that Meta halt the display of these false ads in Poland for three months. Meta has acknowledged the issue, emphasizing that scam content violates their policies and is removed when detected. The company is currently reviewing the office’s decision and continues to work with businesses, local authorities, and law enforcement to tackle these fraudulent activities.
