Meta’s Global Outage
On Facebook, many found themselves unable to log into their accounts, while Instagram users were stuck with feeds that wouldn’t refresh or show new content. Downdetector, a website that tracks internet outages, recorded over 14,800 reports of Instagram being down and 12,100 reports of Facebook outages during the peak period.
The issues even extended to Threads, Meta’s new Twitter-rival app, with an error message popping up for some when trying to open it.
As netizens flocked to other platforms like X (formerly Twitter) to share jokes and memes about the outage, X’s owner Elon Musk cheekily tweeted “If you’re reading this post, it’s because our servers are working.”
While temporary outages are not uncommon for major tech platforms dealing with immense traffic, they are certainly frustrating for users who rely on these services for communication, entertainment and information sharing.
After around an hour of downtime, the issues appeared to be resolved as Meta’s services gradually came back online for users. No official explanation was provided by the company regarding the cause of the global outage.
In our highly connected digital world, such widespread disruptions serve as a reminder of how dependent we’ve become on these social media giants and the importance of robust infrastructure to prevent prolonged failures. Users will be hoping for more reliable uptime as they continue to embrace these platforms in their daily lives.
