Apple TV Plus has confirmed that Foundation season 2 will debut on July 14, much to the delight of fans of the series. Alongside the release date, Apple released a trailer for the forthcoming season, which promises an epic sci-fi war that rivals Star Wars and Star Trek in terms of scale and action. The series is based on Isaac Asimov’s book series of the same name and is one of Apple’s most ambitious and expensive original shows.
According to the plot synopsis revealed by Apple, Foundation season 2 will take place more than a century after the first season and will see the tension rise throughout the galaxy. As the Cleons unravel, a vengeful queen plots to destroy the Empire from within. The Foundation has also entered its religious phase and is promoting the Church of Seldon throughout the Outer Reach, inciting the Second Crisis: war with Empire. The season will chronicle the stories of four individuals transcending space and time as they overcome deadly crises, shifting loyalties, and complicated relationships that will ultimately determine the fate of humanity.
Foundation season 2 will see the return of Lee Pace, Jared Harris, Leah Harvey, and Lou Llobell as the show’s main characters in Brother Day, Hari Seldon, Salvor Hardin, and Gaal Dornick. Terence Mann, Laura Birn, and Cassian Bilton will also return as Brother Dusk, Eto Demerzel, and Brother Dawn. The season will also introduce new characters, including Ella-Rae Smith as Queen Sareth and Rachel House as Tellem Bond.
Foundation has helped to lead Apple TV Plus’ push into the sci-fi genre. While other shows like See helped to lay the initial foundations, Foundation proved that there was audience demand for long-form storytelling in this space on Apple’s streaming service. Since the first season of Foundation ended, Apple has released a number of other sci-fi series, including Invasion, Severance, Silo, Circuit Breakers, and Hello Tomorrow!, with some of them already renewed for second seasons. The success of these shows proves that Apple’s focus on the sci-fi genre is paying off, and the anticipation around Foundation season 2 is a testament to the appetite for this type of storytelling.
