Samsung is rolling out a new beta News app to replace its existing Free app on Galaxy devices. The app, which is similar to Apple News, focuses on top headlines, morning and evening briefings, and customizable feeds. Additionally, users can listen to podcasts through the app, setting it apart from other news apps.
Initially, the News app will feature content from “trusted partners” such as Bloomberg, Huffington Post, and Sports Illustrated. However, Samsung plans to add more outlets and features in the future.
The News app will be available in the US in the coming weeks, and will automatically replace the Free app if it’s already installed. Users can also download it from Samsung’s Galaxy Store. While the change may create some inconveniences for users who were used to accessing news alongside Samsung TV Plus channels and casual gaming, the News app offers a more streamlined and focused news experience.
While there’s no mention of a paid service comparable to Apple News+, Samsung’s move towards services is not surprising given the current state of the phone market. By offering appealing services like News, Samsung is hoping to retain customers and potentially generate revenue through content purchases.
