Reddit’s Latest Update Takes a Page from TikTok and Instagram, Redefining User Experience

With its newest mobile app upgrade, Reddit is edging closer to TikTok and Instagram.

In a blog post, the firm announced a new upgrade to its iOS and Android mobile apps, which includes a makeover as well as a number of new features and improvements to how you explore and enjoy content on the app.

The first update is that users will be able to search inside comments on the desktop, iOS, and Android applications. The firm disclosed this update on Reddit around a week ago, and it comes as an extra search option after it offered the ability to search comments throughout the site.

The firm is also launching News Feeds, where customers can pick between “Read” and “Watch.” Read is described on Reddit as “a technique to optimise material for folks in the mood for text surfing,” while Watch is “an alternative for video aficionados to tailor their feed for video content.”

The Watch option is an intriguing addition since it allows for a comparable video experience to sites like TikTok and Instagram. Users may upvote, downvote, comment, and share videos by swiping up to view content. It’s unclear if the films are only made by the community you’re in, or whether Reddit believes you’ll love videos from other groups.

On top of that, the mobile app is being redesigned with a new UI that will “make it simpler for consumers to identify relevant information and contribute to communities faster,” according to the business. It also hinted at a “updated web platform to bring fast and reliable experiences to everyone worldwide, new upgrades to our video player to allow redditors to easily join in discussions while watching, chat refinements, new shop updates, and more.”
