Xiaomi’s rumored Mix Flip foldable phone recently passed an important milestone on its way to an eventual launch. Regulatory filings in China offer new details about the unreleased folding phone while confirming some previously leaked information.
Documents from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology reference a Xiaomi device believed to be the Mix Flip. Beyond proving work continues on the flip-style foldable, the certification reveals the Mix Flip will surprisingly support satellite connectivity for expanded coverage options.
The filings also verify expectations that the Mix Flip will run Android and support 5G cellular networks. But more interesting is the potential addition of satellite links to enhance connectivity – a foldable phone first if true.
While specs remain unconfirmed through official channels, earlier leaks provide clues about what Xiaomi may be planning hardware-wise. A top-of-the-line Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor would bring flagship power for smooth multitasking. An advanced triple lens camera system, possibly with 3x optical zoom, would also keep photo capabilities competitive with premium conventional phones.
In terms of design, we can hope Xiaomi takes cues from its larger Mix Fold series and keeps the Flip impressively slim when closed. Although availability may disappointingly be limited just to China if Xiaomi follows a similar path to previous Mix launches.
For now, all signs point to an innovative folding phone that could push boundaries with satellite connections most smartphones lack. But Xiaomi ultimately still needs to nail down basics like screen and hinge durability that make foldables practical daily drivers. The hardware looks promising, but the Mix Flip’s success rests more on perfecting fundamentals than headline space-age features.
