X App Introduces Video and Audio Calling for All Users, Rivaling Messaging Giants

In a move that positions the social media platform formerly known as Twitter as a direct competitor to messaging giants like WhatsApp and Facebook, X has expanded its audio and video calling capabilities to all users, no longer restricting the feature to Premium subscribers alone. This strategic decision by Elon Musk, the new owner of the rebranded X, aims to transform the micro-blogging service into a comprehensive communication hub, empowering users to engage in free video and audio conversations directly within the app.

X App Introduces Video and Audio Calling for All Users, Rivaling Messaging Giants

The introduction of this feature marks a significant milestone in X’s evolution, blurring the lines between traditional social media platforms and messaging apps. Users can now initiate video or audio calls with fellow X users directly from their direct message (DM) conversations, streamlining the process of staying connected with friends, family, and professional contacts.

To initiate a call on the X app, users simply need to navigate to the DM section, select an existing conversation or start a new one, and tap the phone icon. From there, they can choose whether to make an audio or video call. The recipient will receive a notification alerting them to the incoming call, and once accepted, the conversation can commence seamlessly within the app.

For users who prefer not to receive calls on the platform, X has thoughtfully included an option to disable the feature. By navigating to the Settings and Privacy section, users can toggle off the “Enable audio and video calling” option, effectively removing the phone symbol from their DMs and preventing fellow users from initiating calls with them.

This move by X positions the platform squarely in competition with established messaging services like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram, which have long offered audio and video calling capabilities. By integrating these features into its social media platform, X aims to provide a comprehensive communication solution, potentially reducing users’ reliance on multiple apps for different purposes.

As X continues to evolve under Musk’s leadership, the introduction of audio and video calling represents a significant step towards transforming the platform into a multifaceted communication hub, catering to the diverse needs of its user base and solidifying its position as a formidable contender in the ever-changing social media landscape.
