WhatsApp Screen Sharing Feature Begins Rolling Out to Android Users

WhatsApp, the popular messaging app owned by Facebook, is taking a cue from work-centric video call platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams with its latest update. According to reports from WABetaInfo, the company is in the process of rolling out a screen sharing feature that allows users to record and display the contents of their screen during video calls.

The new feature is represented by an icon of a phone with an arrow pointing out of it, which appears alongside other familiar tools such as switching cameras, muting, and disabling video at the bottom of WhatsApp calls. When users click on the screen sharing button, a prompt will appear, asking if they want to “Start recording or casting with WhatsApp?” accompanied by a disclaimer that WhatsApp will have access to any passwords, photos, or payment details that are displayed during the screen sharing session. If users are comfortable with this, they can proceed by clicking “Start now.” It is also worth noting that users have the ability to stop sharing their screen at any time during the call.

Currently, the screen sharing feature is only available to select Android beta testers, but it is expected to roll out to more users in the coming weeks. However, it may not be compatible with older Android models, larger group calls, or with individuals who have not downloaded the latest version of WhatsApp. For iPhone and iPad users who prefer alternative options to WhatsApp, it is worth mentioning that Apple integrated a similar screen sharing feature into FaceTime calls in January.

The introduction of screen sharing in WhatsApp’s latest update reflects the app’s efforts to expand its functionality beyond basic messaging and voice calls. By incorporating features commonly found in work-centric video call platforms, WhatsApp aims to cater to users’ evolving needs in an increasingly digital and remote-oriented world.

As the screen sharing feature becomes more widely available, it is expected to enhance communication and collaboration among WhatsApp users, particularly in work-related contexts where sharing screens can facilitate presentations, demonstrations, and remote assistance.
