Walmart to Bolster EV Charging Network with Large-Scale Expansion Plan

Walmart, the retail giant, has made a significant announcement regarding its plans for expanding its electric vehicle (EV) charging network. The company revealed that “thousands” of Walmart and Sam’s Club locations across the United States will be equipped with new EV charging stations. The implementation of this expansion is expected to be completed by 2030, though the exact number of locations to be added to the network has not been disclosed.

Currently, Walmart operates 1,300 EV fast-charging stations at over 280 retail stores and affiliated facilities. The new expansion aims to bring convenient charging options to more Americans, with Walmart stores or clubs located within 10 miles of approximately 90% of the U.S. population. This move is expected to make EV ownership more accessible for people living in rural, suburban, and urban areas alike.

Vishal Kapadia, Senior Vice President of Energy Transformation at Walmart, stated, “Easy access to on-the-go charging is a game-changer for drivers who have been hesitant to purchase an EV.” The company is actively seeking energy suppliers for this initiative, having previously worked with providers such as EVgo and VW’s Electrify America. Each participating Walmart store will receive four chargers, and the company has committed to keeping energy prices affordable, though specific cost estimates have not been disclosed.

This expansion of the EV charging network is part of Walmart’s broader efforts to improve its environmental sustainability. The company has set a goal for all supply chain vehicles to achieve “zero emissions” by 2040, and it has already begun transitioning to electric vehicles for deliveries. Walmart’s commitment to expanding its EV charging network and reducing its overall environmental footprint showcases its dedication to sustainable practices and staying at the forefront of corporate environmental initiatives.
