The indie roguelike game Vampire Survivors has received a major update on Steam, introducing four-player couch co-op gameplay. This update, version 1.6, allows players to team up with friends locally and face waves of night creatures together.
With the addition of local co-op, up to four players can play the entire game, including its DLC, cooperatively. The developer, Poncle, is also exploring the possibility of adding official online multiplayer in the future but suggests using Steam Remote Play to play with friends who are not physically present for now.
In addition to the co-op feature, version 1.6 of Vampire Survivors has transitioned the game to an entirely new game engine. This change enables the development of larger features that were previously challenging to implement on the old engine. Players have reported smoother performance on the Steam Deck with the new engine. However, the game is still accessible on the old engine using the password ‘PhaserVersion2023’, although it won’t receive further updates.
Vampire Survivors is also available on the Nintendo Switch, featuring couch co-op and all the updates that Steam users have received. While cross-save functionality is not currently available, the developer is working on it, promising a safe and fully functional release after thorough testing.
Poncle has hinted at exciting developments behind the scenes, with a major feature in the works since December 2022. Further announcements about this feature are expected in the coming weeks, building anticipation for the future of Vampire Survivors.
