Ubisoft has confirmed the development of The Division 3, and it may well be one of the most nonchalant game announcements in recent memory.
The revelation comes courtesy of a press release issued by the French publisher. The announcement mentions that Julian Gerighty, the creative director behind Star Wars Outlaws, has taken on the role of executive producer for the Tom Clancy’s The Division series.
However, what’s truly surprising is the nonchalant manner in which the press release mentions that Massive Entertainment, the developer behind the first two entries in the series, is “actively building a team” for the development of The Division 3. Currently, Massive Entertainment is fully focused on the development of Star Wars Outlaws and Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, the latter of which is slated for release on December 7 this year.
Despite this news, it’s important to temper expectations regarding The Division 3. The game is likely still in its early stages, so it may be several years before fans catch even a glimpse of a teaser trailer, and even longer before the game’s full launch.
Additionally, The Division 2 continues to receive seasonal content updates, and the release of the free-to-play spin-off, The Division Heartland, may precede the launch of the third installment. However, very little information has been disclosed about Heartland since its initial announcement in May 2021.
While waiting for the third major title, fans of the series may turn their attention to The Division Heartland once content for The Division 2 starts to wane. Given that the second entry in the series is approaching its fifth year since release, it’s plausible that the most dedicated fans would welcome something fresh while anticipating the next major release. Alternatively, an upgrade for The Division 2 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X could be a welcomed addition for players.
