Zhou Guanyu, the Alfa Romeo driver, impressed with an incredible P5 during the Hungarian Grand Prix qualifying. Alfa Romeo is not typically expected to feature in Q3, but the team and car showed strong performance on the Hungaroring track.
Zhou topped the times for significant portions of Q2 and finished in P5 in Q3, making it his best-ever qualifying performance. He outpaced cars from Ferrari, Mercedes, and Red Bull on his way to securing a favorable starting position for the race.
The Chinese driver credited the competitive car provided by the team and his ability to execute the plan when it mattered most. Despite having his lap time deleted for track limits, he managed to deliver an impressive performance in the final stints of all qualifying sessions.
Looking ahead to the race, Zhou believed a top-six finish was possible. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to fight and maintain their track position or make gains in positions higher up the grid. While he acknowledged that Ferrari might have a slightly stronger package, he remained focused on their own race and aimed to compete within the top six.
