After a two-month exclusivity on Sony’s Direct consumer storefront, Sony’s well-received PlayStation VR2 headset is finally making its way to retailers. Sony announced the news on Twitter but has not stated when or where the PSVR 2 will be available. Customers are advised to check with their local retailers for availability.
However, UK retailer ShopTo has indicated that the VR headset will be available beginning May 12th. However, it is unclear whether the date applies to every online and physical retail location. It’s also worth noting that a new Switch game, The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, will be released on May 12th, so there may be crowds of gamers looking to buy both items.
Because the PSVR 2 headset costs $550, which is more than the PS5 console, increased availability will almost certainly result in sales and discounts. Sony has not disclosed any sales figures for the headset, but it has cut its sales forecast for the February launch in half due to fewer pre-orders than expected. The fact that the headset was only available through Sony’s website did not help its sales.
The PSVR 2 has received praise for its impressive visuals, updated controllers, and haptic feedback capabilities, though the game library is currently limited. The headset’s increased availability could lead to more widespread adoption and competition with the Meta Quest platform. Overall, the virtual reality industry is expected to benefit from this move.
