The controversial remake of Prince of Persia by Ubisoft has been shifted to a new studio

Following an indefinite delay and months without an update, Ubisoft has revealed that the production of its highly anticipated Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake will be relocated to its Montréal, Canada studio. The game was previously in development at Ubisoft’s Mumbai and Pune labs in India.

“The development of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake will now be overseen by Ubisoft Montréal, the exact birthplace of the legendary Sands of Time trilogy,” according to Ubisoft’s Twitter post. “This is a critical choice, and the team will now take the time needed to refocus on the scope of the game to give the best experience for this remake of an all-time classic when it’s ready, building on the work accomplished by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai.”

The Sands of Time remake is intended to be a remastering of the game, not just a reskin, and will be based using Ubisoft’s AnvilNext engine. It was originally scheduled to be released in January 2021 on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. There hasn’t been any word about optimization for the Series X/S or PS5.

Due to pandemic-related concerns, Ubisoft pushed back The Sands of Time’s release date by a few months before deciding to postpone the game’s release forever. Ubisoft’s most recent update on the game was in October of last year, and it just reassured fans that devs were still working on it.
