The BMW XM looks a lot better as a safety car

Hey car enthusiasts, remember when BMW dropped the XM on us? Well, they’ve been up to some shenanigans since then. First, there was the XM 50e, and then they unleashed the beast, the Label Red – although they decided to ditch the “Red” part later on. Classic BMW moves.

So, what’s the Label up to now? Well, it’s gone from the mean streets to the racetrack, transforming into the MotoGP Safety Car for the 2024 season. They’ve pimped it out with a beefier front splitter, a cool rooftop light bar, and extra flashy LEDs up front. Inside? Oh, they threw in Recaro bucket seats, a snazzy six-point harness, buttons for the new lights, and just for kicks, a fire extinguisher. You know, in case things get a bit too hot.

The big reveal happened at the MotoGP season finale in Valencia, where BMW also handed over the keys of one to Francesco Bagnaia for being the fastest qualifier. Last year, lucky guy got an M3 Touring. BMW’s been doing this MotoGP car thing for 25 years now, and they’ve handed out the BMW M Award for speed 21 times. That’s some serious commitment to the racing game.

Now, let’s talk about the XM Label. It’s not your average purist’s dream – it’s big, heavy, and a tad bit wild in the design department. But, and it’s a big but, it’s BMW’s most powerful production ride ever. We’re talking a twin-turbo V8 and an electric motor teaming up to crank out a jaw-dropping 738 horsepower and 737 lb-ft of torque.

Hold on to your wallets, though. In the US, it’s BMW’s priciest ride, starting at $185,000. Toss in a Bowers & Wilkins sound system and the M Driver’s Package, and you’re looking at nearly $192,000.
