The 5 Best Compact Saloons of 2022

As SUVs become more popular, compact saloons are becoming less common on the roads. However, these types of cars can be great choices for daily use, especially if you choose the right one. The top compact saloons not only have a classic three-box shape and a desirable badge, but they also offer athletic and engaging handling, a smooth and comfortable ride, a luxurious and well-made interior, strong performance, and good fuel efficiency.

Additionally, with stricter emissions regulations, it is helpful if a compact saloon has a tax-friendly plug-in hybrid option. Finding a car that strikes the right balance between all these features can be challenging, but the following cars offer the most convincing combination of these attributes.

Number 1. Mercedes-Benz C-Class

The latest Mercedes C-Class is a highly impressive competitor in the compact executive car segment. As always, it’s best to think of the C-Class as a miniaturized S-Class, and in the case of this W206 model, that analogy has never been more accurate. The Mercedes sets the standard for interior design and luxury, especially with its extensive use of TFT screens, and a longer wheelbase means taller passengers can comfortably sit in the back. Standard equipment is generous across the range, and the technology and materials used in the top-of-the-line versions are particularly opulent and impressive.

The car’s driver assist systems are also very strong. While the C-Class’s handling may not be as precise or inviting as some of its competitors, Mercedes fans will appreciate its more laid-back ride and luxurious character. The standard 2.0-liter diesel engine, which is used in the C220d and C300d models, is a quiet, efficient, and capable performer, and there’s also the 402 horsepower AMG-tuned C43, which is now a four-cylinder, electrically assisted Q-car, and the forthcoming 670 horsepower, four-cylinder hybrid C63.

Mercedes also offers a tax-saving plug-in hybrid version of the C-Class, the C300e, which features a four-cylinder engine, electric motor, and a large 25.4 kWh battery. The C300e claims an impressive 68 miles of electric range, enough for most daily tasks and low BiK tax band. It’s also a punchy and smooth performer that’s rarely caught off guard as it switches between different power sources.

Number 2. BMW 3 Series

The recently refreshed seventh-generation “G20” BMW 3 Series continues to be the top choice in the compact executive car segment. For the past 40 years or so, the 3 Series has established itself as the go-to compact saloon for those buyers who value exquisite handling, dynamic performance, and genuine driver appeal. Only the Jaguar XE and Alfa Romeo Giulia have come close to the 3 Series in these areas. The 3 Series has also been given subtly sharper looks on the outside and an interior overhaul that includes the latest technology, such as a large touchscreen infotainment system.

However, what sets the 3 Series apart from its competitors is its engines, which offer a superior blend of performance and efficiency compared to other cars in its class. The cabin is also practical, well-built, and sophisticated, both in terms of materials and technology. While the 3 Series’ firmer, more insistent ride may not appeal to everyone, it remains the standout choice, particularly in the six-cylinder 330d or four-cylinder 320d versions.

The 320d was awarded a full five-star rating when it was road tested in 2019 for its excellent combination of speed, drivability, efficiency, refinement, and handling poise. The plug-in hybrid 330e will be of interest to many fleet drivers, but its inability to achieve a claimed 40 miles of electric range puts it in the 12% BiK tax bracket. It remains our favorite hybrid executive saloon of its size.

Number 3. Alfa Romeo Giulia

The Alfa Romeo Giulia has made a strong comeback in the compact executive class with its impressive handling, sporty appeal, and stylish design. Its rear-wheel drive platform and range of powerful engines, including the high-performance Quadrifoglio model with its Ferrari-derived V6, make it a standout choice for driving enthusiasts.

The interior received updates in 2020, improving the usability of the infotainment system, though it still lacks some of the material appeal of competitors like the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series. Despite this, the Giulia offers a unique blend of agility, balance, and compact road feel that sets it apart from other cars in its class, especially in diesel versions that offer strong performance and fuel efficiency.

Number 4. Tesla Model 3

The Tesla Model 3 has made a strong impact on the compact executive car market since its introduction. Its impressive performance and handling, coupled with its all-electric powertrain and long range, make it a compelling choice for car buyers. In our road test of the Standard Range Plus model, we were impressed by its responsive acceleration and agile handling, as well as its real-world range of 200 miles. While the Model 3 may not have the same spacious cabin and trunk as its larger sibling, the Model S, it still offers a practical and stylish interior with a minimalist design.

However, the Model 3 is not without its drawbacks. Its ride comfort and refinement may not match the level of other electric cars, and it may not be as practical as some of its competitors in the compact executive car segment. Despite these issues, the Model 3 is still a strong performer and offers a unique driving experience that is sure to appeal to many car buyers.

In late 2020, Tesla introduced a number of updates to the Model 3. These updates included new design elements such as new alloy wheels and interior trim options, but the most significant change was the addition of an updated heating and air conditioning pump. This update, combined with a few powertrain modifications, has given the Model 3 even greater range, with Tesla now claiming a range of 305 miles for the rear-wheel drive model, 340 miles for the Performance model, and 374 miles for the Long Range all-wheel drive model. Overall, the Tesla Model 3 is a strong contender in the compact executive car market and offers a unique driving experience that is sure to appeal to a wide range of car buyers.

Number 5. Genesis G70

The Genesis G70 is a compact executive sedan that has been available for a few years, but is still a newcomer to the UK market. It received a facelift in 2018 and is based on the same platform as the now discontinued Kia Stinger. While the G70 boasts a high level of quality and a generous list of features, it lacks some of the latest technology found in other Genesis models and only offers a limited selection of engines, including a single diesel and petrol option.

This may limit its appeal to some buyers. The G70’s handling is competent and precise, but it lacks excitement, and its ride and refinement fall short of being truly luxurious. However, its interior finish and materials are of a high standard and can compete with established premium brands. It is worth considering if you are looking for something unique, but potential buyers should be aware of its low residual value and high company car tax bills due to its older engines and lack of a plug-in hybrid option.
