Tears of the Kingdom Won’t Get a Sequel, Producer Eiji Aonuma Confirms

Hopeful Zelda fans craving more of Tears of the Kingdom’s hyrule may need to sheathe expectations for now – producer Eiji Aonuma recently confirmed the epic sequel concludes his vision for Breath of the Wild’s world, with no plans for a direct follow-up down the line.

In an interview with GameInformer, Aonuma elucidated that “with Tears of the Kingdom, we were seeking to build on top of the world we created with Breath of the Wild and really exhaust the possibilities of what we could put into that world.” As a definitive evolution of BotW’s foundation, he considers Tears an “apotheosis – the final form of that version of The Legend of Zelda.”

Notably, that doesn’t rule out revisiting this newly expanded Hyrule eventually – just not in back-to-back succession. As Aonuma mused, “that would be a sequel to a sequel, which is getting a little bit wild when you think about it!” Fair enough – even the hero of the wild needs a break now and then.

With Tears only six months old and still yielding hidden surprises, the team is clearly focused on letting this poignant adventure resonate first anyway. But Aonuma’s words hint at fresh narrative territory gestating behind the scenes.

So while we may yet return to Breath of the Wild’s Hyrule down the road, it seems this particular storyline reaches its curtain call in Tears’ emotional finale. A fitting sendoff, but the thought of entirely new lands and quests sparks the imagination anew.

Here’s hoping inspiration finds Aonuma and team soon – those itchy wanderlust feet already yearn for the next unforgettable trek across pristine frontiers only Link can uncover! But for now, may our Champion get some well-earned R&R by the cooking pot before destiny calls anew…
