Final Fantasy 16 Requires SSD for Optimal Performance

Eager RPG fans anticipating Final Fantasy 16’s PC port have new tech insights straight from the game’s producer. In a recent Famitsu interview, Naoki Yoshida offered a key heads up for players still lagging on old school HDDs – consider upgrading those mechanical drives to SSD asap.

“I would like you to prepare an SSD,” Yoshida suggested, as translated by PCGamesN. “In Final Fantasy 16, a game where loading speed is critical, the HDD would be a pain.”

Given the original PS5 release made full use of the console’s ultra-fast 5.5 GB/s internal SSD, his point becomes clear. While the team promises to optimize performance wherever possible, hardware barriers persist. No amount of software magic alone can offset using a relative trunk compared to Sony’s speed demon storage.

So unless you fancy pacing around while levels load, an SSD may become mandatory to enjoy Final Fantasy 16’s world fluidly on PC. Fortunately, our guide to the best SSDs for PS5 offers several excellent and affordable PCIe 4.0 options matched to Sony’s flagship drive. Any of those models should breeze through the game’s demands and then some.

Of course, official system requirements are still forthcoming down the line. And considering the renowned visual splendor FF16 brought to next-gen consoles at launch, other upgrades may be advised too for buttery smooth gameplay.

But at minimum, players clung to classic mechanical drives should absolutely budget an SSD upgrade to avoid a sluggish Corridor of Temporal Distortion each boot. Take it from Yoshida himself – no one wants turn-based buffering when humanity’s fate hangs by a thread! Here’s hoping the rest of the porting work proves smoother than a well-oiled airship flight…
