Spotify Desktop App Gets a Major Overhaul with New Look and Features

Spotify, known for its focus on mobile apps and controversial podcast content, has finally given its desktop app a significant update, calling it “one of the biggest revamps yet.” While the desktop version has been neglected in recent years, Spotify has now made efforts to bring it up to par with its more popular smartphone counterparts. The streaming giant originally began as a browser-based experience before expanding to mobile platforms.

The core browsing and recommendation features remain unchanged in the main content area of the app. However, the left-side of the app window now showcases the newly-launched “Your Library” feature, which had been in testing for a few months. This convenient addition offers immediate access to saved music and podcast collections, streamlining the process of switching between playlists. Users can also collapse the library for a more compact view, enhancing the overall user experience.

On the right side of the screen, a new “Now Playing” view has been introduced. It displays the currently playing content, providing artist biographical information. Additionally, this section allows users to directly purchase artist merchandise and view upcoming tour dates. Some podcasts will even automatically generate a transcript as users listen.

In order to accommodate the new features, the “Friend Activity” feed has been relocated but can easily be moved back. By clicking the “friends” icon next to the profile picture at the top-right corner of the main content area, users can drag and drop to restore the feed to its previous position. Furthermore, for a more streamlined appearance, both the “Friends Activity” and “Now Playing” windows can be completely removed.

Along with these functional updates, Spotify has given the desktop app a visually appealing makeover, aligning its appearance with the sleek design of its smartphone versions. The update is being rolled out to all desktop users worldwide, marking a significant day for the streaming service. The excitement continues for Spotify, as it recently announced a deal with comedian Trevor Noah for a weekly talk show and continues to generate speculation about an upcoming high-fidelity audio tier.
