Sony is apparently putting out an upgrade to enable variable refresh rates on its 2021 TVs with the Bravia XR processor over a year after promised the feature would be available.
VRR, or variable refresh rate, allows your TV to smooth out any stutters or frame rate drops that may occur while gaming, without the distracting screen artefacts or mild input lag that other solutions can cause.
Surprisingly, Sony’s own PlayStation 5 does not currently support VRR – the firm stated it will be included via a software update, but there has been no indication of it so far. However, it is supported with the Xbox Series X and S, as well as any gaming PC with a recent graphics card.
When Sony launched the XR 2021 TVs in early 2021, it stated that they would support VRR following a software upgrade – though that update appears to have taken a long time to arrive, as it is only now being rolled out. Still, it’s better late than never for anyone trying to play demanding titles like Elden Ring or Cyberpunk 2077’s pre-patch version, where VRR could go a long way toward smoothing up the experience. It can also improve the experience when playing games that are mainly simple to play; you can use your TV’s 120Hz refresh rate without worrying about a sudden, temporary frame rate decrease breaking your flow and ruining the buttery-smooth experience.
