Some of Hulu’s most popular shows will soon be available on Peacock. The parent firms of the streaming services, Disney and Comcast, have canceled a deal to transmit NBCUniversal titles to Hulu.
After broadcasting on pay television, episodes of NBCUniversal-owned shows including Saturday Night Live and The Voice will premiere on Peacock rather than Hulu. Because Hulu will no longer be paying for some of NBC’s most popular shows, the deal may allow Hulu to pursue more original programming.
The adjustment is expected to take effect during the next broadcast season, potentially in September or October. The termination will not result in the removal of all NBCUniversal programming from Hulu, as the businesses have agreements in place to keep shows like Law & Order SVU and This Is Us on the platform for several more years.
The agreement is a huge triumph for NBCUniversal’s Peacock, which has relied largely on its rights to major sporting events like the Olympics and Super Bowl LVI to attract customers. Peacock, on the other hand, has struggled to generate the same impact with its unique programs.
In a crowded streaming market, the addition of extremely popular shows to Peacock’s programming lineup could help it maintain and potentially recruit users who would otherwise go elsewhere.
