You unpack your brand new GL.iNet Slate 7 and need a rock?solid connection—fast. In this guide, you’ll get your Slate 7 up and running in minutes, so you can stream 4K demos or host video calls without a hitch.

Step 1: Unbox & Power On
- First, unfold the two external antennas for best coverage.
- Next, connect the USB?C power cable to the Slate 7’s PD port. You can use a 5?V/3?A, 9?V/3?A, or 12?V/2.5?A adapter—your laptop’s USB?C or a power bank works fine.
- Wait ~30 seconds for the touchscreen to light up
Step 2: Connect to the Slate 7 Network
- On your laptop or phone, open Wi?Fi settings.
- Select the SSID GL-Slate7-xxxx (typically found on the bottom label).
- Enter the default password printed on the same label.
Step 3: Access the Web Admin Interface
- Open a browser and navigate to http://192.168.8.1
- Log in using the default credentials (admin/admin)
- You’ll see the Dashboard: real?time throughput, connected clients, and signal strength.
Step 4: Configure WAN & LAN Ports
- Go to Network ? Internet.
- Choose WAN port (2.5?Gbps) or LAN port (1?Gbps) role under Port Settings.
- If you have a wired uplink, plug in via the 2.5?GbE WAN for up to 2.5?Gbps throughput
Step 5: Set Up Wi?Fi 7 SSIDs
- Navigate to Wireless in the menu.
- Under 2.4?GHz and 5?GHz, enable each band.
- Assign custom SSIDs like
Slate7-24G
andSlate7-5G
and strong WPA3 passwords. - Click Save & Apply—you’re now broadcasting at up to 688?Mbps on 2.4?GHz and 2882?Mbps on 5?GHz
Step 6: Enable VPN (Optional)
- Head to VPN in the sidebar.
- For OpenVPN, upload your
.ovpn
file—speeds reach ~100?Mbps. - For WireGuard, paste your config—expect up to 540?Mbps throughput.
- Toggle Connect. You’re now browsing securely via over 30 supported VPN providers
Step 7: Install Plugins via OpenWrt
- In System ? Firmware ? Plugin, browse the repository.
- Install tools like luci-app-statistics for traffic monitoring or firewall-custom for advanced rules.
- Reboot if prompted.
