The company’s Chief Technology Officer, Ehren Kret, recently announced a crucial upgrade to Signal’s protocol, reinforcing its already robust end-to-end encryption.

Kret emphasized that this enhanced “layer of protection” is specifically designed to shield against the hypothetical scenario of a powerful quantum computer emerging in the future, capable of dismantling current encryption standards. Quantum computing, though not yet a global reality, is poised to revolutionize computational power and, consequently, pose a significant risk to encryption methods currently in use.

Signal has steadily gained popularity over the years due to its unwavering commitment to user privacy and security, distinguishing itself from less secure messaging services. Kret acknowledged, “Although quantum computers already exist, the systems known to exist today do not yet have enough qubits to pose a threat to the public-key cryptography that Signal currently uses.”
