Wind power fans, get hype! Siemens Gamesa is about to drop the world’s most beastly offshore wind turbine ever in Denmark. We’re talking record-breaking power levels here.
Siemens just got a 30 million euro grant from the EU to build this monster turbine. They’re keeping the exact details totally secret for now, but it’s part of a project called HIPPOW – aka Highly Innovative Prototype of the most Powerful Offshore Wind turbine. I know, not the catchiest name.
The point is this thing aims to crush records and blow other turbine makers out of the water. With strong offshore winds, companies keep trying to one-up each other with massive turbines covering huge areas. The EU wants to get back in the innovation game against China.
So what kind of power rating is Siemens gunning for? Their current turbines max out at 15 megawatts. Vestas and GE are working on 15-18 megawatt designs. But some Chinese companies already have 16-18 megawatt turbines in the water.
To grab the “world’s most powerful” title, experts think Siemens needs at least 20 megawatts. That’s a huge jump though, and they might start with 18 first. Either way, the plan is to get this record-breaking new turbine designed, built and spinning before the end of 2024.
Siemens isn’t saying yet if it’ll be a demo model or go straight to a commercial wind farm. But they’re moving fast, with construction starting in April.
For wind power nerds like me, it’s awesome to imagine the insane size and output of what Siemens is cooking up. This mystery turbine sounds set to push boundaries and get Europe back in the game against China’s rapid innovation. I can’t wait to see the eye-popping specs they’re keeping secret for now. 2024 is gonna be a huge year for offshore wind!
