The launch of Samsung’s XR (Extended Reality) headset has been delayed, reportedly due to the arrival of Apple’s Vision Pro device. Originally scheduled for February 2024, the Samsung headset is now expected to launch in mid-2024 or later.
According to SBS Biz (via SamMobile), the release of the Apple Vision Pro prompted Samsung executives to reevaluate their own devices. One possible reason for the delay is the need to enhance the display sharpness to compete with Apple’s offering.
Samsung is seemingly determined to ensure that its headset does not appear notably inferior to Apple’s product, even if it is priced more competitively. The Vision Pro is priced at $3,499 and is anticipated to have limited availability initially.
Details about the Samsung XR headset are currently scarce. It is believed to run on Google’s Android software and be powered by a Qualcomm chipset, but further specifications have not been disclosed.
The term “XR” refers to various related technologies, encompassing augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and mixed reality (MR). AR overlays digital objects onto the real world, VR creates immersive digital environments, and MR enhances AR by allowing digital objects to interact with the physical world.
While the exact capabilities of Samsung’s XR headset remain unknown, the additional development time should result in a more refined and competitive product. Consumers will have to wait until the device is unveiled to see how it compares to Apple’s Vision Pro.
