Samsung Prepares to Launch Successor to Popular Portable SSD: The Samsung T9 SSD

Samsung is gearing up for the launch of a successor to its widely acclaimed portable SSD, the Samsung T7 SSD, more than three years after its initial release.

The Samsung T7 SSD has garnered a reputation as one of the best SSDs, and especially one of the best portable SSDs, according to reviews. Despite the introduction of several new iterations in the T7 family, such as the T7 Touch and T7 Shield, in recent years, Samsung appears to be preparing for a hardware refresh.

This anticipation coincides with the approaching annual Black Friday sales event in November, during which TechRadar Pro has identified several online retailers listing a 2TB version of the Samsung T9 SSD. While this product hasn’t officially launched, its imminent arrival seems likely.

Samsung has provided minimal details about the T9 SSD, assigning it the product number MU-PG2T0B, which retailers like PC12.fr and Grosbill Pro have adopted.

An Australian retailer, Microboss, also briefly listed a version of the T9 SSD, although it has since been removed at the time of writing.

Technical specifications remain undisclosed, but it appears that the SSD will be available in a 2TB capacity. Microboss, in particular, indicated that it boasts impressive read and write speeds of up to 2GB/s, potentially doubling the speed of its predecessor and positioning it as one of the fastest portable SSDs available, if these claims hold true.

The initial Samsung T7 SSD was released in 500GB, 1TB, and 2TB models, suggesting a similar lineup may be expected for the T9 at launch. Samsung could also potentially expand the size offerings to include a 4TB version or larger in the future, as it did with the T7 Shield.

Furthermore, there’s a possibility that the T9 SSD could be priced more competitively than the T7 at launch. PC12.fr has listed the T9 SSD for €236.52 including VAT (approximately $250), while Grosbill Pro is retailing the device for just €199 (around $215), though it’s unclear if taxes are included in these prices.

By comparison, the 2TB variant of the T7 initially retailed for $370, alongside the 1TB model at $200 and the base 500GB edition at $110.

Given the evolution of technology, a successor to the popular T7 SSD is eagerly anticipated, particularly since the original device lacked Thunderbolt 3 support at launch. With some of the fastest SSDs now incorporating Thunderbolt 4, it remains speculative whether Samsung may include this standard in the upcoming T9, but it’s a possibility worth considering.

The exact release date for the Samsung T9 SSD remains unknown. However, it’s reasonable to speculate that Samsung may aim to launch it in advance of Black Friday, which falls on November 24th this year.
