Microsoft’s latest overhaul of Windows 11, known as the 23H2 update, brings a significant change in the form of a rebadged Chat app, now rebranded as “Microsoft Teams (free).” This consumer-focused application simplifies communication by offering seamless chat, calling, and the ability to create free meetings with just a click or two.
Amit Fulay, the Product VP of Microsoft Teams, announced this transition, highlighting the app’s user-friendly features. Alongside this rebranding, Microsoft introduces a new desktop client view aimed at reducing intrusiveness.
In addition to the regular, full-sized Teams window, users can now opt for a condensed experience referred to as ‘Mini.’ This choice can be easily accessed in the top right corner of the application, giving users more control over their experience.
While Microsoft Teams is predominantly known for its powerful video conferencing and online collaboration tools in business settings, it has faced challenges in gaining traction among regular consumers. However, with this update, Microsoft is determined to change that narrative.
A standout feature in the update is the introduction of ‘SMS in Teams.’ This feature enables users to send and receive SMS messages from compatible Android phones, enhancing the versatility of the platform (apologies to iPhone users).
The update also brings improvements to gaming with Teams, enhancements in the Communities section, and refined notification settings. According to John Cable, the VP of Windows Servicing and Delivery Program Management, this update offers new features and functionality within a familiar, fast, and reliable update experience.
Notably, Windows received a substantial update at the end of September, introducing features like Copilot natively integrated into the OS, AI-enhanced tools for Paint, and a streamlined backup process, among other enhancements.
If you’re eager to experience the Windows 11 23H2 update, it’s available now and can be installed via Settings > Windows Update. This update promises a more user-friendly and feature-rich Windows 11 experience for both regular consumers and business users.
