Red Hat Study Reveals Urgent Tech Skill Gaps in UK Businesses, Especially in AI and Cybersecurity

Hey, check out this new study from Red Hat – it found that UK businesses are really struggling to keep their tech skills up to date.

7 in 10 IT leaders said they urgently need more AI expertise on their teams. Strategic thinking and cybersecurity were also called out as big skill gaps that need addressing fast.

Over a quarter said that the lack of qualified talent is their number one problem right now. That’s a huge skills shortage threatening their ability to stay competitive as technology evolves.

Some reasons given were high workloads limiting training time, tight training budgets, and siloed departments not collaborating. Plus the software landscape moves so fast, it’s hard to keep up.

Many companies already have great systems but don’t have the skills to use them to their full potential. AI tools in particular require careful planning to maximize efficiency, but there’s no time for that.

As one Red Hat engineer put it, they don’t have time for the changes that would give them more time. Classic catch-22 situation!

The report makes clear these skill gaps around AI and other key tech areas are urgent for UK enterprises. More training budgets, better tech platforms, and tracking impact were suggested as ways to help plug the holes.

So in summary, UK businesses are in a tough spot – they know they need certain tech skills to stay cutting edge, but finding and developing that talent is a huge challenge.
