Paralives Shakes Up the Simulation Genre with Features Absent in The Sims for Decades

The upcoming life simulation game Paralives is introducing a new autonomy system that allows characters to make independent decisions, setting it apart from The Sims series. In a recent Patreon post by the development team, it was revealed that Parafolks, the in-game characters, will be able to autonomously perform certain actions, such as going to work, exploring new activities, and even using the bathroom. Neglecting basic needs, like feeding themselves, can result in Parafolks dying.

This autonomy system represents a departure from the more manager-focused gameplay of EA’s The Sims franchise. However, for players who prefer full manual control, the option to disable autonomy will be available in the settings menu. Some actions, like dying of hunger, will still occur autonomously, regardless of player settings.

In The Sims series, characters can die from starvation, but the system is not particularly realistic. It typically requires intentionally locking Sims in a room with no access to food, as they can often autonomously fulfill their hunger needs if other Sims are present in the household.

Paralives has generated considerable interest as a potential rival to The Sims 4 in the life simulation genre. While no official release date has been announced, the game has a Steam landing page. The game is not yet available in early access or gold status, but the development team has plans to continue expanding the autonomy system, potentially allowing Parafolks to autonomously perform tasks like cleaning the house or pursuing hobbies like playing music. The addition of more causes of death is also being considered for the game.
