Blizzard is keeping its cards close to its chest when it comes to new game modes for Overwatch 2, but one thing we do know is that any forthcoming mode will come with a cornucopia of new maps. This latest tidbit comes as the game’s third season looms on the horizon, and follows hot on the heels of news that the team is gearing up to release a new control map.
In an interview with Dexerto, art director Dion Rogers explained that Blizzard aims to maintain a healthy balance of maps for each game mode. “We probably would never release a new game mode with just one map,” he noted, adding that the goal is to provide players with plenty of variety when it comes to strategic layouts.
While this news may disappoint fans eager for a sneak peek at the next game mode, it does offer some insight into the release strategy for new maps. For example, it’s unlikely that we’ll see new maps added to modes like Push, which already has the fewest maps of any mode, while Escort players can expect to enjoy a rich variety of landscapes, as this mode already boasts a generous eight maps.
With Antarctica Peninsula set to expand the pool of Control maps to five, it seems clear that Blizzard is doubling down on its commitment to keep Overwatch 2 fresh with regular content drops. And while we may still be in the dark about what form the next game mode will take, one thing’s for sure: players can look forward to a wealth of new battlegrounds on which to wage their colorful battles.
