Nvidia is getting ready to launch their powerful GPU, the B100 Blackwell graphics processor in 2024. This upcoming GPU is expected to have than double the power of the recently released H200. The H100 and H200 already showed performance improvements and the B100 aims to take it even further especially when it comes to handling AI workloads. The B100s architecture is named after David Harold Blackwell, a mathematician.
This GPU will bring enhancements in memory bandwidth using an upgraded version of the technology found in the H200. However there’s a challenge with the memory technology as Micron, the supplier won’t release their next gen HBM4 until 2025. To address this challenge Nvidia might explore options with Samsung being a likely choice. Looking ahead Nvidia plans to stick with a release cycle starting from 2025 and introduce chips like the X100 and GX200.
This strategic move aims to meet the increasing demand, for hardware that supports AI models. However not everyone agrees with this strategy. CEO Andrew Feldman of Cerabras Systems has criticized Nvidias approach of pre announcements by calling it “predatory.” The industry will closely observe how Nvidias new GPUs perform and how the market responds upon their release.
