Formula 1 correspondent Lawrence Barretto suggests that Williams is making every effort to support Logan Sargeant, but if his performance doesn’t improve, Mick Schumacher becomes the “obvious contender” to replace him for the 2024 season.
Logan Sargeant made his debut in Formula 1 with Williams in the 2023 season, joining at a time when the sport is enjoying growing popularity in the United States. However, on the track, the Williams Academy graduate has struggled to make an impression after transitioning from Formula 2. Sargeant has yet to score any points and is facing a performance gap compared to his teammate, Alex Albon.
Mick Schumacher was previously linked with Sargeant’s seat in a mid-season driver swap, with Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff’s strong ties to new Williams boss James Vowles potentially facilitating the move. While the swap didn’t materialize, Williams continues to support Sargeant in the hope that he can improve.
Barretto believes that unless Sargeant can turn his performance around, a driver change is highly likely for the 2024 Formula 1 season. Williams already has Alex Albon secured for 2024, but Sargeant needs to demonstrate better consistency and narrow the gap to Albon, particularly in qualifying, to secure his place for another season.
Williams currently sits in seventh place in the Constructors’ standings, with all 11 of their points this season earned by Alex Albon. If Sargeant doesn’t show improvement, Mick Schumacher, who had discussions with the team last year and has been praised for his efforts as a Mercedes reserve, could emerge as the prime candidate for the seat.
