It’s been over three years since Marvel’s Avengers, the live-service game created by Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix, was released, but the company has announced that official developer support for the game will be ending. The developers announced in a recent blog post that the last game update, version 2.8, would be delivered on March 31, 2023, with support for the game ending permanently on September 30.
Despite the termination of developer support, both single-player and multiplayer modes will remain accessible. The most recent content pack, which included the Winter Soldier hero and Cloning Lab Omega-Level Threat in update 2.7, will now be the game’s last content release, with the next 2.8 patch mainly addressing balance concerns. The in-game economics will also be changed to reflect the new realities of the co-op superhero adventure.
“When update 2.8 launches on March 31, 2023, Credits will no longer be purchasable and all remaining Credit balances will be converted into in-game resources to aid ongoing adventures.”
There is some good news for game fans: effective March 31, 2023, the team will make all of the game’s Marketplace, Challenge Card, and Shipment decorative material accessible to all players for free. This implies that starting today, every Outfit, Takedown, Emote, and Nameplate will be free.
Avengers premiered to mixed reviews and was often contentious, with some players loving the game’s live-service cycle of characters to improve and personalise, while others bemoaned what they saw as imposed in-game mechanisms that detracted from what could’ve been something bigger. In the end, the game included the release of 12 separate heroes, leaving many more characters from Marvel’s vast cabinet of characters unexplored.
