Hideki Kamiya, the renowned game director behind titles like Bayonetta, and co-founder of PlatinumGames, is bidding farewell to the company he helped establish in 2006 when it was known as Seeds Inc. While this move may come as a surprise to some, it follows Kamiya’s recent promotion to Vice President within the organization. Kamiya took to social media to express the difficulty of his decision, stating that it was “by no means an easy decision to make.”
Kamiya’s tenure at PlatinumGames will officially conclude on October 12, allowing him a few more weeks in his current role. As for the reasons behind his departure, Kamiya mentioned that it “came after a lot of consideration based on my own beliefs,” but chose not to delve into further details. He did, however, reassure fans that he intends to continue making games in his distinctive “Hideki Kamiya way.” While his future plans remain undisclosed, considering he is only 52 years old, it’s highly unlikely that he will opt for complete retirement.
Kamiya’s indelible mark on the gaming industry is substantial. Most notably, he served as the supervising director for the critically acclaimed Bayonetta 3. Over his fifteen-plus years at PlatinumGames, Kamiya contributed to an impressive array of classics, including the original Bayonetta, the cult favorite The Wonderful 101 for Wii U and Switch, and the action-packed Astral Chain, among others. Prior to founding PlatinumGames, Kamiya had a noteworthy tenure at Capcom and its subsidiary, Clover, where he helmed projects like Resident Evil 2, Viewtiful Joe, and ?kami.
In recent years, Kamiya had been deeply involved in the development of an internally referred to superhero title known as “Project GG.” He served as the lead director for this “heroic” game, and PlatinumGames had positioned it as the concluding chapter in his superhero trilogy, alongside Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101. While Kamiya’s departure raises questions about the fate of “Project GG,” PlatinumGames has yet to make any announcements regarding the status of the game.
