Jenson Button, the 2009 Formula 1 World Champion, has drawn attention to an uncomfortable fact regarding Lance Stroll’s performance in the 2023 F1 season. Stroll, currently in his fifth season in Formula 1, has amassed 37 points from the first eight races, placing him in eighth position in the Drivers’ Championship. While this is Stroll’s highest-ever position in the championship, it pales in comparison to the remarkable achievements of his Aston Martin teammate, Fernando Alonso.
Alonso has secured an impressive six podium finishes in eight races, including two second-place finishes, a fourth-place, and a seventh-place. As a result, he has accumulated 117 points, triple the tally of Stroll. Alonso currently sits in third place in the Drivers’ Championship, a mere nine points behind Sergio Perez. Aston Martin currently occupies the third position in the Constructors’ Championship, but if Stroll were scoring as strongly as Alonso, the team would comfortably secure second place.
The stark contrast in performance has led to increased scrutiny on Stroll’s form, especially considering Aston Martin’s potential to finish higher in the championship standings and secure increased prize money funding for next season. When asked for his thoughts on Stroll’s season so far, Jenson Button bluntly remarked, “He’s had one good race – Barcelona.” Stroll out-qualified Alonso in Spain due to a mistake from the Spaniard that resulted in a damaged floor during qualifying. Stroll then finished just ahead of the two-time World Champion in the race.
Button suggested that Stroll’s wrist injuries from a pre-season cycling accident, combined with Alonso’s exceptional form, may be affecting Stroll’s performance. Button acknowledged the difficulty of competing against a relentless driver like Alonso, who is always at the top of his game.
Despite starting the Canadian Grand Prix from 16th position, Stroll’s ninth-place finish earned him praise from Aston Martin team boss Mike Krack. Krack highlighted Stroll’s strong race performance, managing to achieve competitive lap times on hard tires while being stuck in traffic. However, former McLaren and Red Bull driver David Coulthard remains unconvinced that Stroll possesses the necessary qualities to help Aston Martin reach their full potential this season.
Coulthard emphasized the importance of objective timing and results, stating, “The stopwatch doesn’t lie.” While acknowledging that Stroll has displayed talent throughout his career, Coulthard believes that there comes a point where excuses can no longer be made.
As the season progresses, Stroll will undoubtedly aim to improve his performance and make a more significant contribution to Aston Martin’s campaign. With the guidance of experienced teammates and the support of the team, Stroll has the opportunity to demonstrate his capabilities and establish himself as a formidable force on the Formula 1 grid.
