In ‘one last update,’ Pebble smartwatches get Pixel 7 compatibility

The Pebble smartwatch has been shipping to backers of its phenomenally successful first Kickstarter campaign for over a decade, but there’s still life in the old dog. The wearables are now compatible with the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, as well as future 64-bit Android devices.

The most recent Pebble update arrives four years after the last one. The most recent version enabled many of the Pebble app’s features to operate on separate servers. Fitbit, which has since been acquired by Google, shut down Pebble’s servers in 2018, two years after purchasing some of the wristwatch maker’s assets.

In addition to Pixel 7 compatibility, the current update increases Caller ID reliability on recent Android versions. While the software isn’t yet accessible on the Google Play Store, Berry noted that the APK is signed using authentic Pebble keys and preserves Google Fit functionality.

On the surface, this appears to be the end of the road for Pebble in terms of government backing. “Many thanks to Google for providing us with one final update,” Berry said on Reddit. So, if your Pebble’s e-ink screen and battery are still functional, it may be used for a little longer.
