How to check if someone has blocked you in iMessage

iMessage has evolved from being a standard built-in messaging app on iOS devices, to becoming a dedicated messenger for those who are on the Apple ecosystem. Being an iPhone user myself, I have found myself using iMessage to send and receive messages to my fellow iPhone using family members and friends, sometimes over conventional messengers like Whatsapp. The interface is simple, the latest iOS 18 has brought in a slew of new features, and overall, it is definitely a compelling package to consider for your messaging needs.

Now, like most other messaging apps in the market, iMessage also allows users to block people, cutting off communication, and it can be very tricky for the other person to realise that he/she has been blocked. If you have believe that one of your iMessage contacts has blocked you, and you want to make sure before confronting them, this guide is for you.

Obviously, there is no direct notification you receive from the app itself, making it quite tricky to know whether or not you have entered someone’s block list, but there are some tell-tale signs that you can check for, and if any of these apply to you, there is a good chance that you have been blocked on iMessage.

How to check if someone has blocked you in iMessage

Number 1. Open up your iMessage app and head to the message thread of the person who you suspect has blocked you. Try sending a message. If the message does not show the ‘received’ or ‘read’ tag, then you may have been blocked by the concerned recipient.

Number 2. Open up the iMessage app and head to the chat of the user you think has blocked you. Typically, when you send a message from one iMessage user to another iMessage user, the message window is blue in colour. Try sending him/her a message. If the window is green, then there is a chance that the recipient has blocked you on iMessage.

Number 3. Head to the contacts app and scroll until you see the user in question. Open up their contact and initiate a Facetime call. If the call returns or fails with an error message, then there is a good chance that the receiver has blocked you on iMessage.

Number 4. One more thing you can try is calling the concerned person. If the call rings one and heads to voicemail, there is a good chance that you have been blocked by the receiver.

Number 5. Finally, if neither of these give you conclusive outcomes, you can try reaching out to the concerned person through other social platforms and ask them if they have maybe blocked you on iMessage.

Let’s face it, getting blocked by friends or colleagues is not ideal, but it is easy to deal with if you know that it is the case. Have a clarity on your bonds and friendships, as misunderstandings can lead to long term fall-outs. Be clear with those who are close to you.
