Google Ends Support for First-Gen Chromecast

In an announcement on Chromecast’s informational hub, Google stated, “Support for Chromecast (1st gen) has ended, which means these devices no longer receive software or security updates, and Google does not provide technical support for them. Users may notice a degradation in performance.” Interestingly, this declaration went unnoticed for some time, as Google last updated the Chromecast support page in April.

From Google’s perspective, discontinuing support for the 10-year-old original Chromecast has been a long time coming. Since 2019, the company has primarily focused on addressing bug fixes and security issues rather than providing substantial updates for the first-generation device. The most recent update occurred in November 2022, after a gap of three years. In the meantime, Google has released newer versions of the Chromecast, such as the more affordable $30 Chromecast with Google TV (HD) and the $50 4K model.
