George Russell has jokingly dismissed Max Verstappen’s recent comments about potentially retiring from Formula 1, suggesting that it is a tactic to negotiate a higher salary.
Verstappen has previously expressed concerns about the increasing demands of the sport and his desire to explore other racing disciplines, hinting that his career may not be as long as some of his counterparts. With the record 24-race calendar planned for the 2024 season, Verstappen has reiterated his reservations about committing to Formula 1 long-term.
Mercedes driver George Russell, who competes against Verstappen on the grid, responded to the retirement threat with a lighthearted remark. Russell jokingly suggested that Verstappen’s comments are simply a tactic to secure a bigger paycheck, given his status as one of the highest-paid drivers in Formula 1.
“I think he’s whinging because he wants more money!” Russell quipped during media discussions at Silverstone. “It’s all a big tactic of his, that threat of retirement. I hope he stays for as long as I stay because I want to fight against the best drivers in the world.”
Russell expressed his desire to compete against top drivers like Verstappen and Charles Leclerc and emphasized that Formula 1 is in a strong position as a sport.
Regarding the expansion of the Formula 1 calendar, Russell takes a more neutral stance. While acknowledging the challenges that will arise due to extensive travel, he believes that the scheduling of certain races together can alleviate some of the strain.
Russell acknowledged that the upcoming period will be demanding for everyone involved but expressed optimism about the current state of the sport. He looks forward to battling against the best drivers and continuing his head-to-head rivalry with Lewis Hamilton.
