Epson has introduced its latest addition to the ultra short throw (UST) projector family, the EpiqVision Ultra LS650 Smart Streaming Laser Projector. This projector complements Epson’s existing UST lineup, positioning itself between the EpiqVision Ultra LS500 and EpiqVision Ultra LS800 models.
Incorporating Epson’s renowned 3-Chip 3LCD technology, the LS650 delivers exceptional image quality, capable of projecting images of up to 120 inches with 3,600 lumens of both color and white brightness. This level of luminance closely rivals Epson’s LS800 projector, a standout choice for sports enthusiasts, and is featured in the best ultra short throw projectors guide.
One notable distinction between the LS800 and the new LS650 is the latter’s longer throw ratio, necessitating a 10.5-inch installation distance from a 100-inch screen. (By comparison, the LS800 requires only a 3.9-inch installation distance for the same screen size.) Setting up the projector is simplified through Epson’s iOS and Android Setting Assistant app, offering detailed geometric correction with support for up to 33 x 33 correction points.
The Epson UST projector utilizes 4K PRO-UHD2 technology with advanced pixel-shifting to produce intricate 4K images. It supports HDR10 and HLG high dynamic range content and boasts dual HDMI inputs, including one with eARC. The projector incorporates an Android TV 6 interface, enabling built-in streaming from popular platforms such as Amazon Prime Video, Hulu, Disney Plus, YouTube, and more. Additionally, users can conduct voice searches using the integrated Google Assistant.
UST projectors offer an all-in-one home cinema solution, and Epson addresses the audio aspect with a 2.1 virtual surround system designed in collaboration with Yamaha. The built-in speakers are elegantly enclosed by a new metal grille design, enhancing both visual aesthetics and audio quality compared to traditional fabric mesh grilles used by other UST projectors.
The Epson EpiqVision Ultra LS650 will be available in black or white color options. While pricing and availability for the US market are yet to be announced, the LS650 will retail in the UK for £2,299 (approximately $2,900 or AU$4,500), with shipments set to commence in October.
Epson’s LS800 is highly regarded as the top choice for sports enthusiasts in the UST projector buying guide, thanks to its impressive 4,000 lumens light output, making it one of the brightest UST projectors available. It excels in delivering bright and contrast-rich images even in well-lit rooms, making it ideal for various viewing environments. The LS800’s pricing is set at $3,499 (about £3,199 or AU$5,240).
Epson’s new LS650 projector offers a brightness of 3,600 lumens, providing excellent luminance that closely matches the LS800. This level of brightness is similar to the LG Cinebeam HU915QE, another top choice in the UST buying guide, priced at $5,999 (around AU$9,999 or £5,600). Anticipated to be priced below Epson’s LS800 in the US, possibly under $3,000, the LS650 fills a compelling niche, balancing affordability with high-performance capabilities for home theater-style viewing across diverse environments.
