Epic Games Reverses Course on Cosmetic Gating Amidst Community backlash

After the recent Island Age Rating thing caused a big fuss in the Fortnite community, Epic Games is saying they’ll chill on it for a bit until they figure out a better “long-term solution.”

So, they dropped the news on Fortnite’s official site, letting us know they’re turning off the cosmetic gating for most of Fortnite’s outfits starting with the v28.00 update on December 3. But, there’s a catch – a few items will still be affected. They say it’s only gonna be a “small number of existing cosmetics and less than 10 outfits.” Apparently, they picked these because they’ve got “obvious fear or violence elements.” Whatever that means.

Now, this whole cosmetic gating thing was part of that Island Age Rating deal, where they slapped ESRB ratings on every user-made thing in Fortnite Creative. If a map got an E or E10+ rating, they’d disable specific costumes and throw in some generic one instead.

According to their blog post, only about “7%” of skins got hit by this, and they promise most of them will be up for grabs for all age ratings soon. But, despite the reassurances, the Fortnite community wasn’t too happy about it. The main gripe seemed to be that paid costumes were getting the short end of the stick because of this update.

Oh, and don’t forget – the v28.00 update that’s making these changes is also kicking off Fortnite Chapter 5. It all starts with a live event called The Big Bang on December 2. Word on the street is that it might involve Eminem and a collab with Lego. Speaking of which, Lego even responded to the event by dropping a Lego version of the Fortnite llama.
