Ascendant Studios, led by Bret Robbins, the creative director from the original Dead Space, is set to release its first major project in collaboration with EA, the magic first-person shooter, Immortals of Aveum on July 20th. The game will be available on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Windows PCs.
Unlike traditional fantasy shooters, Immortals of Aveum is centered around a combination system that rewards players for mixing up different magic types to defeat enemies. Players can also leverage magical abilities to create shields or turn the environment against foes. In addition to the unique gameplay mechanics, Ascendant is promising a narrative-focused experience with an extensive backstory. To further bolster the game’s story, recognizable voices like Darren Barnet from Never Have I Ever and Gina Torres from Firefly have been enlisted.
Ascendant Studios is part of a growing trend of indie studios formed by industry veterans from major game developers. The team also includes former Telltale Games employees and people behind notable games like Spider-Man and Tomb Raider. The studio’s formation in 2018 was with Immortals of Aveum in mind, and the game’s release will mark a major milestone for the studio.
With this project, Ascendant is hoping to regain creative control, following in the footsteps of other well-known exiles. The partnership with EA is allowing the studio to publish through major brands while still maintaining creative control. Immortals of Aveum is already generating buzz in the gaming community, and fans are eagerly anticipating the game’s release on July 20th.
