After a brief period of uncertainty, CD Projekt Red has stated that their forthcoming Cyberpunk 2077 expansion pack, the Phantom Liberty DLC, has the highest budget of any CDPR project. The first (and last) expansion for the cyberpunk RPG promises to be a full enhancement to the basic game in every manner.
Despite the fact that Cyberpunk 2077 had a rocky start, CD Projekt Red was able to turn things around for the most part. The impending Phantom Liberty DLC is expected to be the one-two punch that might propel the game to ultimate greatness, but it goes without saying that only time will tell whether this happens.
CDPR confirms that Phantom Liberty is the biggest expansion in the studio’s history. from cyberpunkgame
Recently, the media reported on CDPR Investment Manager Marek Bugdo’s interview with Parkiet, a local Polish journal. Bugdo’s comment was first interpreted to suggest that Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty will be the studio’s largest DLC to date. However, a CD Projekt Red staffer subsequently explained on Reddit that the comment really meant that the DLC has the largest budget ever allocated to a single project under CDPR’s umbrella, which is a very significant distinction.
Of course, this does not diminish the significance of Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty DLC, but one cannot help but question how this new DLC compares to other of CDPR’s prior production, such as The Witcher 3’s own well-received expansion packs.
There is no getting around the similarities to Phantom Liberty, but The Witcher 3’s two main DLCs set a fairly high standard for subsequent post-launch content releases. It remains to be seen if they will work to CD Projekt Red’s advantage. The company will undoubtedly want to outdo it is previous The Witcher releases, but convincing the fans to forget how poorly CP2077 launched would be quite a challenge.
To keep things fresh, Phantom Liberty might take from The Witcher 3. Certain DLC features and design decisions should have provided inspiration to the team working on the Cyberpunk 2077 DLC, and if all goes as planned, Phantom Liberty might re-energize the game’s audience and, indeed, the game itself.
