Cities: Skylines 2 Takes a Dark Turn with Introduction of Deadly Natural Disasters

The upcoming Cities: Skylines 2 game will feature natural disasters, marking a significant change from the original Cities: Skylines, where natural disasters were only available as part of a DLC (Downloadable Content) package.

In the sequel, Paradox Interactive, the developer of Cities: Skylines 2, is focusing on realism, including changes to climate and seasons. The game will introduce new day and night cycles, and climates will be based on latitude and longitude, resulting in different lengths of day and variations in sunlight, temperature range, cloud coverage, and precipitation. These changes will introduce four distinct seasons, and players will need to consider the impact of climate on their cities.

The climate system in Cities: Skylines 2 will have consequences for citizens, affecting their behavior and energy consumption. For instance, temperature and weather conditions will influence citizens’ decisions on whether to use outdoor parks or indoor leisure activities. Hot weather will increase energy consumption as cities need air conditioning to cool down.

One significant addition to the game is the inclusion of natural disasters, which were previously only available as DLC in the original Cities: Skylines. In Cities: Skylines 2, natural disasters will be part of the base game. These disasters will be random events, challenging players to make in-game decisions on emergency responses and resource prioritization. Some of the disasters players might encounter include forest fires, hailstorms, and tornadoes.

Players will have access to an Event Journal, located on the right-side panel of the main user interface, where they can review past events and natural disasters, including details about when they occurred and their outcomes. This information will help players plan and prepare for future events.

Overall, the introduction of natural disasters and a more realistic climate system should add depth and challenge to the city-building gameplay of Cities: Skylines 2.
