Mercedes-Benz is getting ready to roll out its brand new operating system called MB.OS, after years in development. Designed in-house, MB.OS made its first public appearance at CES 2024, showing off unique features like an AI assistant, audio and gaming apps, and 3D graphics.

The MB.OS software, separate from the MBUX infotainment system, is supposed to be quicker and more efficient than current Mercedes setups. That should improve responsiveness and processing power. One obvious change from old to new is the MBUX Virtual Assistant, which uses AI and a large language model to provide more natural speech and conversations.

Like the current “Hey Mercedes” voice assistant, you can give natural commands like “I’m hungry.” But while Hey Mercedes would just recommend some nearby restaurants, the new assistant gives menu and review summaries to help you decide on a spot. It can also suggest routes and functions based on your routine, like reserving parking or rescheduling calendar events if you’re running late.

The Virtual Assistant even tailors its personality to your mood. If it senses frustration, responses will be shorter and more direct. If you’re happy, it will be more cheerful and conversational. It can even portray emotions on the center display using a star field that changes colors and icons for reactions like “laugh” and “celebrate.”

The new 3D navigation will take advantage of the gaming engine for sharp graphics and detailed directions. It incorporates driver assist info like surrounding vehicles and road signs to build trust between you and the safety systems. Detailed displays recommend specific lanes and provide augmented reality prompts.

The navigation also reflects surroundings like buildings, time of day, and weather to help you make decisions and see where you’re going in tight city driving.

An updated MBUX will include built-in Audible and Amazon Music. When you play Dolby Atmos books, radio dramas, or music, it synchronizes speakers, mood lighting, and seat rumblers for an immersive experience.

The new MBUX also partners with Sony Pictures for streaming video and Antstream for retro arcade games. Video includes big titles like Gran Turismo and Spider-Man, while the arcade has classics like a running game made with Mercedes. Of course those only work when parked or using Level 3 driver assist.

The first car with MB.OS will be the upcoming Concept CLA production model, optimized for EV but also offering gas engines. MB.OS will roll out to other new Mercedes vehicles, and some features will come to existing cars via over-the-air updates.
