Uzbekistan Unveils Value of Renewable Power Projects in Pipeline

During the “New Uzbekistan: Progress, Innovation and Education” conference held in Tashkent, Jurabek Mirzamakhmudov, the Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan, announced that over the past years, the country has signed 21 cooperation agreements with international corporations for the development of solar and wind energy plants. These agreements are aimed at achieving a total capacity of 7 GW for solar and wind energy plants, while an additional 5 contracts have been concluded for the transportation of electricity produced for domestic consumption, with a total capacity of 2 GW.

Currently, Uzbekistan is actively implementing projects for 19 solar photovoltaic (PV) installations with a combined capacity of nearly 4 GW, and 7 wind power plants with a total capacity of 3.1 GW. These projects have attracted investments from renowned international companies such as ACWA Power from Saudi Arabia, Masdar from the UAE, French TotalEren and Voltalia, Gezhouba Overseas Investment Group from China, and Tepelen Group AG from Switzerland.

The total value of these projects amounts to approximately $9 billion, and all of them are being financed through direct investments from foreign corporations. This significant investment showcases the growing interest and confidence in Uzbekistan’s renewable energy sector.

Earlier this year, Minister Mirzamakhmudov expressed the country’s commitment to achieve a 25% share of renewable energy in the overall energy balance by 2026. The development of solar and wind power projects, along with the cooperation of international corporations, will play a crucial role in helping Uzbekistan reach its renewable energy targets and reduce reliance on traditional energy sources.

The expansion of renewable energy infrastructure not only contributes to Uzbekistan’s sustainable development goals but also presents opportunities for job creation, technological advancements, and a more diversified and resilient energy sector. With the continued implementation of these projects, Uzbekistan is poised to make significant progress in transitioning towards a greener and more sustainable energy future.
